We
have seen Batman reimagined in many forms over the years, but Aztec
Batman: Clash of Empires 4K (2025) is definitely a unique adult
themed animated take on the classic superhero franchise from the
talented Mexican director Juan Meza-Leon.
In
the animated film we see Aztec variants of several of Batman's most
formidable foes as well as the Dark Knight himself including Two
Face, The Joker, Azrael, Poison Ivy (known here as Forest Ivy), and
Catwoman (known here as Jaguar Woman,) all of which are blended into
a unique action narrative that keeps the same ideology of the
franchise whilst placing the characters in a different backdrop then
has been seen before.
The
English voice cast features Jay Hernandez (Magnum P.I.,
Suicide Squad) and Raymond Cruz (Sons of Anarchy, The
Mayans, Better Call Saul). The Spanish audio version of
the film features Mexican talent, including Horacio Garcia Rojas,
Omar Chaparro, and Alvaro Morte.
The
film is set in 16th Century Mesoamerica where tragedy strikes
Yohualli Coatl (the reimagined version of Bruce Wayne and here a
young Aztec boy) when his father is murdered by sinister Spanish
conquistadors. To warn King Moctezuma and his high priest, Yoka, of
imminent danger (who ends up being The Joker,) Yohualli escapes to
Tenochtitlan. There, he trains in the temple of the bat god Tzinacan
with his mentor, developing equipment and weaponry to confront the
Spanish invasion and takes up the mantle of Batman. Along the way,
he encounters mythologically inspired super villains that plan to
interfere in his mission for justice.
Aztec
Batman: Clash of Empires 4K is presented in 2160p on 4K UHD disc
with HDR10, an HEVC / H.265 codec, a widescreen aspect ratio of
2.40:1 and an audio track in an English DTS-HD MA (Master Audio) 5.1
(48kHz, 24-bit) lossless mix. The animated film looks very clear in
2160p although I must admit that it's not the best looking animation
that DC has ever done. Not to say that it is particularly bad per
say, but I would have preferred a style closer to the original
Batman: The Animated Series from the 1990s, reviewed elsewhere
on this site.
Special
Features offer two featurettes:
The
Battle Cry of Aztec Batman and The Batman Mythology and Aztec
Inspiration.
Aztec
Batman: Clash of Empires 4K is a fresh take on the DC superhero
that is more entertaining that you might expect in terms of its
conception and narrative execution. However, I think this screenplay
would translate really well to live action or maybe a more realistic
style of digital animation than the style they went with.
