Gerard
Johnstone's M3gan
2.0
(2025) is a more action oriented genre film than its horror-centric
predecessor and utilizes familiar tropes in a clever (and mostly
campy) way of making a sequel that tries something different than the
original. That doesn't mean it always works, but for a few brief
minutes it seems to.
While
the film didn't do so hot in the box office (especially for a
Blumhouse production) it is now out on the 4K UHD format and just in
time for the Halloween season. It's certainly not the worst sequel
ever, but isn't as strong as the first. One thing for sure is that
the M3gan
franchise has deviated itself from being too familiar to the Child's
Play
series with this entry.
The
film stars Jenna Davis (voice of M3gan), Allison Williams (Get
Out),
Ivanna Sakhno (Star
Wars: Ahsoka),
Aristotle Athari (Molli
and Max in the Future),
Violet McGraw (first M3gan),
Jemaine Clement (What
We Do In The Shadows),
and Amie Donald (M3gan body double). Blumhouse and James Wan's Atomic
Monster production company are back to produce.
M3gan
is called back into action when a deadly assassin droid (Sakhno)
causes havoc and is created from the same tech. After she has proved
herself worthy to her creator and beloved teenage friend, M3gan is
upgraded and armed with new weapons to take on a fight with an
assassin bot that is part human and part artificial intelligence.
The battle gets intense as the battle for baddest girl bot rages on
and the death toll around them rises.
M3gan
2.0 4K
is presented in 2160p on 4K UHD disc with Dolby Vision/HDR (10; Ultra
HD Premium)-enhanced Ultra High Definition image, an HEVC / H.265
codec, a widescreen aspect ratio of 2.40:1 and a Dolby
Atmos (Dolby TrueHD 7.1 mixdown for older systems) lossless
mix. Also included is a 1080p high definition Blu-ray disc with a
1080p transfer and similar audio specs with the same sound mix. The
film looks and sounds very sharp on 4K UHD and the budget shows on
the screen with impressive digital effects and solid production
value.

M3gan
2.0
is one of those films where you see most of the highlights in the
trailer. It has some moments that feel horror-like and that echo the
original, but for the most part it's a goofy tech action thriller
that's pure popcorn munching fare. If you're a fan of the M3gan
character there are some cheap laughs and thrills to be had, but the
script borrows from more powerful material and the end result is a
passable, but not incredible result.
