Trick or Treat 4K (1986/MVD/Synapse Films 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray )

Picture: A- Sound: A Extras: B Film: B

Trick or Treat (1986), not to be confused with the more recent Trick R' Treat, is a must own for Heavy Metal fans in this deluxe 4K UHD from Synapse Films. Featuring Ozzy Osbourne and Gene Simmons, the cult classic finally gets a satisfying stateside release.

The film stars Marc Price, Doug Savant, Gene Simmons, Ozzy Osbourne, and Charles Martin Smith. This was also the directorial debut of veteran actor Charles Martin Smith (Never Cry Wolf, The Untouchables, Starman).

A bullied high school metal head named Eddie (Marc Price) ends up with a demo tape of his recently deceased rock idol - Sammi Curr (Tony Fields). When Eddie plays the tape / vinyl backwards he realizes that it unleashes a demon in the shape of his idol that wrecks havoc on all those who bullied him. When the deaths start to pile up, Eddie begs The Demon Sammi to stop, but he becomes obsessed with power and relies on electricity to survive.

Humorously, the film focuses a little on the political situation of the time where Rock Stars were getting called out for inappropriate lyrics. The cameos by Gene Simmons and Ozzy Osbourne are great and the effects have survived the test of time in even this 4K UHD transfer. Speaking of the effects, since they were made around the same time as A Nightmare on Elm Street, there is a slight similarity in the execution of Sammi Curr and Freddy Krueger.

Trick or Treat 4K is presented in 2160p HEVC/H.265, .85 X 1, Dolby Vision/HDR (10; Ultra HD Premium)-enhanced Ultra High Definition image with a widescreen aspect ratio of 1.85:1 and an audio tracks in lossless, English DTS-HD MA (Master Audio) 5.1 (48kHz, 24-bit) and DTS-HD MA (Master Audio) 2.0 (48kHz, 24-bit) Stereo. The film looks sharp on 4K UHD with a highly detailed image that gives a lot of detail in each frame. This is by far the best sounding and looking version of this film to date.

Trick or Treat is an 80s cult classic that doesn't get a lot of attention, but should. Hopefully, this 4K UHD release will bring in a new generation of fans to enjoy this fusion of heavy metal and horror.
