Ueda's One
Cut of the Dead
(2017) is a fun horror/action/comedy that will keep you on your toes
from frame one. The film starts out with a low budget video
production of a zombie film, which soon goes awry after REAL zombies
show up, and attack the cast and crew. About a half hour in, the
opening title pops on, and we realize what we just watched was just a
film... or was it?
One
Cut of the Dead
stars Takayuki Hamatsu, Yuzuki Akiyama, Harumi Shuhama, Mao, and
Kazuaki Nagaya.
The
second act centers around the director getting the job and meeting
the cast and crew behind the scenes. When some actors don't show up,
the actual director and his wife (who was an actress previously) have
to step in and fill the roles. As the film progresses, we see the
production of the film we saw in the beginning, only this time from a
new perspective. The film does a nice job of making the audience
guess what is real and what is an act, specifically in the beginning.
I enjoyed this film very much and found it to be quite clever!
The
film is presented on Blu-ray disc in 1080p high definition with a
widescreen aspect ratio of 1.78:1 and audio mixes in both Japanese
and English DTS-HD MA (Master Audio) 2.0 Stereo (with English
subtitles optional) lossless sound. This two disc steel book set has
a standard definition DVD version included as well with a more
compressed, anamorphically enhanced image and a lossy Dolby Digital
5.1 audio mix in both English and Spanish. Some of the film with
excessive camera movement and action have a bit of compression, but
all in all, the film looks good here on Blu-ray.
