Iron Butterfly – Rock N
Roll Greats In Concert
Picture: B-
Sound: C+ Extras: D Concert: C+
When you say Iron Butterfly, everyone thinks of their
marathon-length Rock classic In-A-Gadda-Da-Vida, but they had some other
good songs and the new but far too short Rock ‘N’ Roll Greats concert,
which only lasts about 40 minutes. The
hits include:
1) Iron
Butterfly Theme
2) Unconscious
Power
3) Butterfly
Bleu
4) Beyond
The Milky Way
5) In-A-Gadda-Da-Vida
6) Easy
Rider
This all lasts a mere 40 minutes, but the band is not in
bad shape for their age, the vocals still recognizable, especially to a
generation used to hearing the song in Michael Mann’s Manhunter (1986,
reviewed elsewhere on this site). This
is over a quarter century after their commercial peak and fans and the curious
will not be too disappointed.
The anamorphically enhanced 1.78 x 1/16 X 9 image is not
brilliant, but not bad for being shot in High Definition. It fares better than the Mark Farner
installment of this series, and almost as good as the Firefall disc
(both reviewed elsewhere on this site.
Unfortunately, the Dolby Digital 5.1 mix is on the lame side, and the
2.0 Stereo a disaster, if not as bad as the Farner DVD. Why the Firefall DVD has better 5.1 than the
other two is anyone’s guess, but this is far from what it could have been
performance wise, undercutting the band.
There are no extras either.
