Nothing
like a bad TV movie trying to cash in on a film that is bad to begin with,
which is exactly how precalculated and lame the awful MTV project Turn The Beat Around is. Sounding like another nightmarish
pseudo-talent competition, it really wants to capitalize on the Fame remake and any bad music trend it
can jump on, but this tired, formulaic wreck every bit as bad as that
remake. And speaking of remakes, every
song it covers, it botches horrifically; especially the title song – a disco
and pop classic.
The story
is about a young lady named Zoe who convinces a rich man to open a new
Discothèque. As absurd as this is,
complete with I Feel Love, Hot Stuff, Disco Inferno and Get Down
Tonight getting butchered, so does anyone watching. Director Bradley Walsh is responsible for
this some-assembly-required wreck that manages not to find a way to put the ‘M’
back in MTV. This is a total waste and
reminds us how far MTV has strayed from being cutting edge or worth watching. Save a few unintended laughs and the shock of
how bad it is, skip this one.
The anamorphically
enhanced 1.78 X 1 image was shot on High Definition video and is loaded with
motion blur throughout. Color is not so
good either, stylized or not, and I can see why there is no Blu-ray. The Dolby Digital 5.1 mix is underwhelming, a
little harsh, compressed and its idea of a soundfield is weak. Extras include Deleted Scenes (try not to
laugh) and a making of featurette.
