Stargate Universe – Season One/SG-U 1.0 (2009/Fox/MGM Blu-ray)

I was
only so impressed by the original 1994 Stargate
feature film and never a fan of any of the TV shows, which actually killed a
potential direct feature film sequel that might have been better. Like Star
Trek, this franchise has TV spin-offed itself into monotony and even with actors
Robert Carlyle and Lou Diamond Philips on board, Stargate Universe – Season One/SG-U 1.0 (2009) is a very tired,
disappointing recycle of everything we have seen in the previous series and the
tired digital work only hinders it further.
This new
Blu-ray double set feature the first ten hour-long shows and the twist here is
that the cats is stuck on an old ship called The Destiny for which they cannot
escape and can they get home? I liked
this better when it was called Space:
1999 (at least for its first season) and was shocked at the dullness and
endless parade of clichés and condescending moments (all teens here are overly
hooked to videogames and computers) that seem extremely desperate
throughout. Too bad, because with some
ambition, this could have distinguished itself from the previous shows, but you
can forget it. For diehard fans only.
The 1080p
1.78 X 1 AVC @ 18 MBPS digital High Definition image is shot on the slowly
aging Panavision Genesis 4K HD camera system with its share of motion blur,
phony color and other imperfections that have plagued most productions (even
the expensive Superman Returns) that
used it. The look is everything we have
seen before. The DTS-HD MA (Master
Audio) 5.1 lossless mix is lacking in a consistent soundfield, dialogue is not
always recorded well and the sound over all the shows is underwhelming overall
as the DTS shows its limits.
Extras
include feature-length cast/crew audio commentaries on all episodes, Exclusive
Extended Version of “Air” Pilot, Kino
Video Diaries including 5 exclusives, Stargate
101 (by Dr. Daniel Jackson), Chatting with the cast of SG-U and Creating a New Universe, a Blu-ray
exclusive with over 40 minutes of exclusive footage.
