SuperGALS! 6 – A Gal’s Heart Never Stops

Though it
is aimed at a young female audience 15 and up, SuperGALS! has surprisingly smarmy and street dialogue for what is
still a kids' show. One of the title
“gals” is in conflict with her harassing teacher and it is like nothing you
would see on U.S. TV. With that said,
this 6th volume of the show on DVD is very average and the conflict
is as trivial as the dialogue, with no point but to it. We do not need to have things be pat where
kids blindly respect adults, but this is not the show that will be a credible
argument for kids if they do not act credible to begin with.
The
mysteries once again are not even on a Nancy Drew level and it was all forgettable
when all was said and done, even with the friends Ran has. Adding games and mysticism is more of a
distraction of actually doing something with what was a promising
situation. Too bad.
The full
frame 1.33 X 1 image is barely better than average, with obvious pencil
drawing, but the animation is far form the worst we have seen lately. There is sound trouble on the final episode,
where al the dialogue is coming from the left speaker(s), depending on how you
play it back. Otherwise, the sound plays
back normally, including the Dolby Digital 5.1 English AC-3 is better than the
Japanese 2.0 Dolby with some Pro Logic surrounds, but the English dubbing may
not be for everyone. It also is limited
either way, coming from TV, but here is some subwoofer activity, if not
spectacular. Extras include textless
opening and closing credit sequences, ADV DVD previews, The SuperGALS! Explain It ALL segment and a poster insert in the
DVD case.
When the
term “super gals” comes up, it is usually a reference to DC Comic’ heroines
like Wonder Woman, Supergirl, Batgirl, Mera, Isis and even Catwoman. They have nothing to worry about here. SuperGALS!
is a mixed show that parents may want to see themselves before deciding if
their children should or not. Why adults
would enjoy this would be much stranger.
Skip it otherwise.
