Though South Korea has
been turning out some good films, even they cannot overcome the glut in the
Gangster genre and Jin Jang’s Righteous
Ties (2006) unfortunately offers every convention possible you can come up
with as a young gangster guy goes to prison to cover for others in his
organization. When his parents are
attacked and those he protects do nothing about it, he knows he must make some
serious changes.
Of
course, he is still stuck in the prison and wants to get out and confront the
head of the organization he was covering for, which brings other possibilities
in play. To make things worse, an old
friend has been sent to stop him, which should have made this a very
interesting film. Instead, we don’t get
much of anything new, so unless you really like the acting and action, this
will not do much for you either.
The letterboxed
1.85 X 1 image is very soft and though color comes through at times, detail,
depth and overall image quality suffer throughout. The Dolby Digital 2.0 Stereo is better and
clearer, but not as good as a film this recent should be. There are no extras.
