Nip/Tuck – Season Five: Part Two (Warner Bros. DVD)

Nip/Tuck is easily one of the best
series/soap operas to ever appear on television. The series was solid from its very first
episode and had this reviewer hooked.
The twists and turns of the series gave it depth and the characters gave
it heart and soul. The drama focused on
the exploits of two of Miami’s
finest plastic surgeons as their world slowly crumbled around them. The film for its first two seasons focused
heavily on the doctors’ patients, but also entwined aspects of their personal
life; it was finely balanced and believable.
Season Three took the series in a different
direction as they brought a serial killer on board to add a fear element to the
series and whereas a bit overly dramatic at times, I was hooked to every
scene. The Fourth Season is where the series began to show wear and it
suddenly had me wondering what happened; where was the Nip/Tuck that had me screaming and buckled up with excitement in Season Two? I thought the series was surely done
for. Season Five shipped the boys from Miami
off to Los Angeles, California as a way to reboot the series and
give the team the second chance it desperately needed.
For
whatever reason (mainly the writers strike) Nip/Tuck had a weird Season
Five run, with big gaps between episodes so that fans were unsure if they
were watching the rest of Season Five
or it was Season Six. Turns out that in the end it was split into Season Five Parts I and II; and by no
coincidence the series was split like such on DVD. The review of Season Five: Part 1 can be found at the link below:

Part 2 of Season Five picks up exactly where Part 1 left off with the boys lives pretty much in shambles. The chaos that was Part 1 has simmered down and for that the series is better. Part 1,
whereas good, began to get too extreme for its own good; becoming more of a
soap opera than the captivating drama it was meant to be. There are only eight episodes in this Part 2, but they will have you hooked
beginning to end. I don’t want to ruin
the short season for anyone who missed the ending of Part 1, but even with the farfetched recovery of Sean (Dylan Walsh)
the second half was amazing. The twists
and turns that mainly focus on ill fated love and romance in Part 2 will keep you on the edge of
your seat. The season finale was not Nip/Tuck’s best, but it definitely was
an “oh snap” moment.
The
picture and sound are the same as was found in Part 1. The picture is
presented in a 1.78 X 1 Widescreen that is crisp and clean, but does have its
moments of light/dark issues, grit, and off balance colors. The sound is a Dolby Digital 5.1 Surround
Sound that does nicely use all the speakers at one point or another, but mostly
comes from the front and the surrounds kicking in mainly for the scenes the
utilize music.
The
extras are pretty bare for Part 2
only featuring a brief Behind the Scenes featurette with Nip/Tuck: The Science of Beauty; that in most ways can be dismissed
as unexciting and uninspiring.
If you
have been a fan (like me) since the beginning, now is certainly not the time to
stop watching. Where as Nip/Tuck may have lost some of its
luster (mainly Seasons 1 and 2) it
is still an insanely enjoyable guilty pleasure.
