Space Pirate Captain Herlock 2 (Anime TV)
Picture: B- Sound: B- Extras: C- Episodes: B-
Space Pirate Captain Herlock continues as the deadly betrayal
in space from the beginning has led to not only the return of Herlock, but the
rise of a terrorist organization The Noo from claiming an unprecedented amount
of outer space for themselves and make it into a living hell for people.
The next
three episodes of the series, dubbed voyages, are here as follows:
5) Battlefield – The Tombstone Planet
6) A Gentle Smile On The Skull Of Memory
7) The Moon Waits In The Promised Land
The
animation continues to better than what we usually get, and color quality is not bad, but the material and the way it is executed
never lives up to the Premise. The lack
of character development continues to be an odd hindrance, yet still typical of
most shows in the genre, making the audience do too much work. Maybe it has to do with appealing to a
younger age group, but does this have to be so dumbed down? It is to the extent that they want fans who
have only limited thought input, but that can get boring quickly. More could have been done with the material
and situation, now more apparent from watching this second DVD set, but that is
simply not the direction the show went in due to the limits set in advance with
the first shows. It is better to check
out the first DVD before moving on to this volume just top see if it is your
cup of tea. I will say the The Moo
almost trivialize terrorism.
The
full-frame image continues to be decent as the more detailed artwork benefits
as a result. There remains certain
amount of softness throughout, but that is more the transfer than the material,
though some of these shows have a softness that is intended. The Dolby Digital 5.1 has not improved in strength
where subwoofer activity is concerned, but this is a TV series, so only so much
can be expected. The Japanese 5.1 (as
usual) has more sound fidelity than the English 5.1 mix, which is typical of
DVDs in the genre, but its subwoofer sound is no better. Extras include almost the same previews that
were on the first DVD, but add the title sequences minus the text print (save
the title of the show), so that’s nice, yet not enough to move this DVD beyond
near basic status. Besides that, that is
all you get.
