After so
many stand-up comics have come along by themselves, I was surprised to see that
not just one, but two comedians were using puppets. It has been years since we have seen such a
thing, but Jeff Dunham and Terry Fator are the revival and both now have DVDs
out of recent concerts they starred in. Arguing With Myself is Dunham doing his
politically incorrect characters that seem more like a product of the
past. That may have appeal with many,
but they did not stay with me and were amusing at best, as was he.
Live From Las Vegas has Fator, who won a TV talent
contest show, with a more diverse set of puppets, plus he performs without them
more often than expected, including singing.
However, that does not make his performance that much better and by the
time both were though, they both had quit while they were ahead. Both are worth a look if you are really
interested, but are best skipped otherwise.
The
anamorphically enhanced 1.78 X 1 image in both cases were shot in High
Definition video and the results are about the same, with some detail limits
and good color, but adequate for such shows. The Dolby Digital 5.1 and 2.0 mixes are really
trying to pump up audio that does not have or need to offer much sonically, but
5.1 is preferred in both cases. The Fator disc has no extras, but outtakes,
bonus clips, audio commentary and the option of “bleeped” or “non-bleeped”
versions are the Dunham extras.
