Everybody Hates Chris – The Final Season (Season Four/2009/Paramount DVD)

Chris
Rock can be funny, but his humor can also be predictable and in order to do a
TV series (TV grind and all), that is closer to what we get in his now
wrapped-up hit TV series Everybody Hates
Chris about his alter-ego (more or less) dealing with growing up. It breaks down into living up to the title of
the show, self-deprecating humor and some politically incorrect jokes that wear
thin quickly.
This
4-DVD set has the final 22 episodes and enough is enough. Tyler James Williams plays the younger Rock,
with the real Rock constantly narrating every single moment of every single
show. That does not always work and
though this is aimed at more of a family audience, it did not have to be this
overly simple. Still, here it is and you
can see for yourself. In this case, I
can’t imagine an earlier season being better than the last one.
The anamorphically
enhanced 1.78 X 1 image is a little soft throughout with some motion blur to
boot and can look good, but sometimes just looks generic. The Dolby Digital 5.1 mix is joke and
dialogue-based so the surrounds are not engaged with much to offer. Extras include a gag reel, deleted scenes,
director webisodes and six featurettes.
