Set
during the counterculture scene in Paris from 1969 to the early 1970s, Alessandro
Avellis’ Ma Saison Super 8 (2005) is
good about going over all the political arguments of the time, but adds more of
a subplot about gay revolution and when France has anti-homosexuality
laws. Marc is an older man who is
involved with the movement, but not happy until he meets the younger
Andre. They become involved, but Marc also
wants to film him and key moments.
Though he
does not go bonkers filming, it does not hamper the relationship at first. The relationship and political aspects are
everything we have seen before and though the couple is convincing enough, it
never feels like its time period. In
addition, by the time the 74 minutes runs out, it adds nothing new to it. The acting is not bad and sex not sleazy, but
this should have run longer and then, it could have said more.
The letterboxed
1.78 X 1 image is shot on low-def digital video and is on the weak side
throughout from detail issues, to inconsistent color to Video Black
issues. The Super 8mm film footage looks
a little better, but is not always presented as its best. The Dolby Digital 2.0 sound is barely stereo
and has location recording issues. The
only extra is a short called The Boy & The Eagle that is only
about 13 minutes, but worth a look.
