Rape is a
very serious subject and on film has a particularly shaky history. In one of the worst films made on the
subject, exploiting it in a confused manner, Reto Salimbeni’s One Way (2006) is a disaster. Opening with a brutal rape that looks like
something out of a 1970s exploitation film, it becomes a rape-revenge
production of sorts that is insulting all the way and wastes everyone’s time.
The
revenge is in the 1980s Rambo style
along with some very angry early 21st Century violence (think a
touch of torture porn throughout) in this unrated, uncut edition. I bet something was still left on the cutting
room floor to make it releasable. That
is where the whole thing belongs. I felt
bad to see Michael Clarke Duncan here, but the rest of the actors are blanks in
their roles and the quicker this is forgotten, the better.
The anamorphically
enhanced 1.78 X 1 image is very soft and poor, not that that dulls the
stupidity we see, but adds to the cheap, condescending nature of the whole
release. At least the Dolby Digital 5.1 has
some surrounds, even when we don’t want to hear it. Should we be surprised that we hear all this
clearly? Extras include a trailer for the
film and sneak peak at other releases that cannot possibly be as bad as this.
