Super Capers (2008/Teen Superhero Spoof/Lionsgate DVD)

In a bad
one-joke 94-minutes exercise in not being funny about anything, Ray Griggs’ Super Capers (2008) is about a young
teen (Justin Whalin) who is trying to establish his heroic credentials to no
avail. Despite appearances by Adam West,
Michael Rooker, Jon Polito, Tom Sizemore, June Lockhart and Clint Howard,
nothing here works and it never goes anywhere.
Odder
still, it is more about sending up0 the genre from the 1960s which poses many
problems, like who in a young age group would get this? Add the fact that West’s Batman series is in limbo (save the 1966 feature on Blu-ray
(reviewed elsewhere on this site) and DVD) really freezes out the last
generation or so. But even if you could
see all three seasons of that show, it still would not help this pointless mess
that Anchor Bay is issuing as Warner issues the unfortunate feature version of Watchmen as an alternative for younger
audiences. They’d be better off watching
the DC Animated releases.
The
anamorphically enhanced 2.35 X 1 image is color consistent throughout, but
Video Black is weak as is detail, while the Dolby Digital 5.1 mix is
underwhelming, without consistency and dialogue is a bit challenging to hear at
times. Extras include storyboard,
digital comic book, deleted scenes, commercials and director audio commentary.
