In his
early big screen days, Treat Williams was on the way to be the next big male
star and made movies with substance like Prince
Of The City and high profile commercial fare like Spielberg’s 1941 and Forman’s version of Hair.
City was not the big critical
hit it deserved to be and is a classic, while the other films were high profile
disappointments, so he got blamed enough that his career was derailed, but his
appeal never waned and he is a longtime survivor of the business. The regressive nature of the 1980s did not
help.
In 2002,
he landed the lead in a moderate hit called Everwood, where he is essentially ‘Dr. Quinn, Brain Surgeon Man’ caught the tail end of that wave of
success and lasted four seasons. Like
the Jane Seymour hit, it is as sappy, predictable and formulaic as the show
that inspired it. It is not the nadir of
Williams’ career and we have seen worse, but this is lame and 22 hour-long
shows all feel sort of the same and too safe.
However, Williams is the #1 reason it was a hit, though the mostly
unknown supporting cast could be worse, but it is flat and only for the most
curious if that. Creator Greg Berlanti
created the hit Eli Stone (reviewed
elsewhere on this site) and is scripting the live action Green Lantern
film. Hope it is better than this.
The
anamorphically enhanced 1.78 X 1 image is mixed with some good shots and more
not so good shots, including motion blur, detail issues and depth limits. The Dolby Digital 2.0 Stereo mix throughout
the shows has limited surrounds and none are memorable sound mixes. The only extra is unaired scenes.
