Fargo (1996/MGM

The Coen
Brothers’ Fargo (1996) is back and
finally on Blu-ray. There have been many
DVDs and none have been satisfactory, but you can read more about the best of
them and the film itself at this link:

After
seeing so many transfers of the film not capturing its often snow-drenched
atmosphere staring with noise issues, softness and ending with bad Video White,
the 1080p 1.85 X 1 AVC @ 21 MBPS digital High Definition image is a revelation
with fine color, consistent detail (even with grain), depth and atmosphere that
brought back my first screening in 35mm with ease. Director of Photography Roger A. Deakins,
A.S.C., delivers a visual experience like no other and few have dared to
imitate it since. It is as impressive as
ever and a must for Blu-ray owners and film fans.
Originally
a Dolby SR (Spectral Recording, advanced analog) theatrical film sound release,
MGM had upgraded the film to DTS-HD Master Audio (MA) lossless 5.1 mix and even
a Dolby Digital 2.0 Stereo with Pro Logic surrounds for purists. The DTS is definitely better than the Dolby
and is a nice upgrade over all previous versions of the film. The underrated Carter Burwell delivers a
great score and the recording of dialogue and sound effects holds up well for
their age and the kind of often dialogue-based drama/comedy this is. Extras are the same as the DVD Special
Edition.
