Pulling – The Complete First Season (2008/MPI DVD)

In the
international wasteland that is TV, some good shows still get made and one of
the most pleasant surprises of late is Pulling,
a comedy from England that is easily the smartest, funniest female-cast comedy
since Absolutely Fabulous, but with
a drama/realism edge that makes it different.
However, that does not damper the comedy and I give the writers credit
for getting so much character development of the three female leads in the
space of so few episodes. That is six
hour-long shows making up this Complete
First Season.
We meet
three female friends who are at crossroads in their lives. Donna (series co-creator Sharon Horgan)
leaves her fiancée when she feels the marriage would be a total failure. With nowhere to go, she moves in with two of
her best friends in Louise (Rebekah Staton) whose main focus in life is getting
a man and Karen (Tanya Franks) who is an alcoholic school teacher. Can three women share an apartment without
driving each other crazy?
Well, if
these six shows are any indication, I can’t wait to find out.
The
anamorphically enhanced 1.78 X 1 image is a little weak, but instead of the
transfer being the culprit; it is more likely from putting six hour-long shows
one disc straining things. Still, this
is a well-shot show and watchable just the same, but I would like to see this
on Blu-ray. The Dolby Digital 2.0 Stereo
mixes on all the episodes are well recorded, edited and clean enough, with some
Pro Logic surrounds, but nothing substantial.
Extras include two cast/crew interview pieces, deleted scenes, audio
commentary on two episodes and a behind-the-scenes featurette.
