Before
becoming the infamous founders of Cannon Films, Producers Yoram Globus and
Menahem Golan were legitimate producers of Israeli films and Moshé Mizrahi’s I Love You Rosa (1972) is one of those
early films that prove to be far more competent than you would ever expect from
the Cannon founders. Taking place in the
late 1880s Jerusalem, a woman falls in love with a child and vice versa has she
is supposed to marry her late husband’s brother.
The age
issue is a disaster and causes nothing but trouble for both of them, bringing
out all kinds of hate and ignorance. I
am certain I missed some key ideas and subtleties here that only an informed
and/or religious person would get, but this is a good film, even if it seems to
run long and somewhat predictably at 72 minutes. Acting is good and though this is an
English-only dubbed version, is watchable.
However, I would like to see it in its native language before I would
cast a final decision on the film. For
now, this version is worth a look.
The
anamorphically enhanced 1.85 X 1 image is softer than it should be with motion
blur throughout and detail issues. There
is also image doubling. The Dolby
Digital 2.0 Mono English dub shows its age, but is in better shape than the
print and passable. There are no extras.
