A daring
project, Writer/Director Remi Lange’s Devotee
(2008) would at first sound like a David Lynch film; man has sex with
amputee. However, they are both men and
the affair is inter-racial. NC-17 in
nature, it could have been even more graphic, but tries to convey the troubles
in such a relationship and yes, they do exist.
Unfortunately
and ultimately, this is not enough time to really examine or explore the subject
and why the characters do what hey eventually do is never fully explained or
explored. That means the director is
showing things he only knows the meaning of too much of the time. Still, that is at least ambitious and
challenging.
The
anamorphically enhanced 1.78 X 1 image was shot on digital video of some kind,
but has some serious definition and aliasing issues throughout, even when the
color holds. The quality can be more
challenging than the content at times.
The Dolby Digital 2.0 is simple stereo at best and often has that
location fell limit. The only extras are
a text filmography of Lange (one frame) and trailer with serious digital
blocking.
