Still Waiting - Unrated (2008/Lionsgate DVD)

Picture: C+     Sound: C+     Extras: D     Feature: D

Waiting (2005) was Lionsgate attempting to have a gross-out hit franchise or at least a cult film that had some names on the rise (Ryan Reynolds (who might have been Warner/DC Comic’s The Flash if he did not keep making this kind of film), Ana Faris, Dane Cook and Justin Long among them) but even their success did not help the film gain a big audience.  You can read more about it at these links:

The belated sequel, Still Waiting, is going straight to DVD with hopes of being some kind of hit, but only a few of the supporting actors (Andy Milonakis, Luis Guzman) returning in vein.  It is very unfunny, has the usual on-purpose food contamination side, but after so many national food scandals of late just does not hold the shock value and less.  A potentially funny new twist is having a Hooters clone called “Ta Tas” opens next to the Shenanigan restaurant.  They are a racier version of the famous “top heavy” establishment and that can only mean trouble.

Unfortunately, the script is flat and has zero laughs, wastes any chances for humor to work and almost everyone seems bored.  At least the first film had some energy, but this never works and seeing Guzman wasted is especially a minus.  You’re better off waiting for another comedy.

The anamorphically enhanced 1.78 X 1 image is slightly soft throughout and looks like a video shoot or very bad digital internegative.  The Dolby Digital is here in 2.0 Stereo with Pro Logic surrounds and a 5.1 mix that are about even, both a bit harsh and not as good as the previous film in any format.  Extras include outtakes, deleted scenes, a making of featurette and writer/director audio commentary.
