In an
attempt to do a different story about religion and homosexuality, Robert Cary’s
Save Me (2007) is a mixed drama
about a gay man (Chad Allen) who is sent to a Christian retreat to curse
himself of drug and alcohol problems, though the real goal is to also get rid
of his sexual preference. The place is
run by a good religious woman (Judith Light) who wants to “help” but does not
play an evil woman and the film in general avoids stereotypes.
However,
it is also on the flat side and resolves little, though I give it credit for
its ambition in dealing with two communities that have been at each other’s
throats, especially since The Reagan Era began.
Performances are decent and the film is never exploitive. Running 96 minutes, it does not wear itself
too thin, but is worth a look for its mature approach.
The anamorphically
enhanced 2.35 X 1 image was shot in anamorphic 35mm film, but is softer than we
expected and is likely a problem with the master. The Dolby Digital 2.0 Stereo has no
surrounds, is dialogue-based and is an adequate recording at best. Extras include deleted scenes, resources
list, stills, photo gallery, trailers and on camera interviews.
