Cannon – Season One, Volume Two (CBS DVD)

Picture: C     Sound: C+     Extras: C-     Episodes: B-

William Conrad finished the first season of Cannon with great success and impact, as the heavy detective whose gun, mind and mouth were faster than he was and a detective show classic was born.  You can read more about the first season at this link:

Actors from the second half of this season include Leif Garrett, Roger E. Mosley, Hal Williams, Val Avery, Tab Hunter, Paul Petersen, Alejandro Rey, Warren Stevens, John Fiedler, Cesare Danova, Barbara Luna, Martin Sheen, Daniel J. Travanti, James B. Sikking, Chuck Taylor, Theodore Bikel, Ivor Francis, Robert Mandan, Vera Miles, Michael Strong, Keenan Wynn, Paul Sorenson, Anne Lockhart, John Rubenstein, Willie Aames, Ed Lauter, Gerald S. O’Loughlin, Percy Rodrigues, Jason Wingreen, Anthony Zerbe, Richard Carlson and Erik Holland.  Despite all the name talent, there are many good actors who were given spotlight appearances as guest stars in the opening credits who did not go on to great success as you might thing or would have been more obvious from other shows.

Still, Conrad carries the show well and against some great talent, cementing this as his greatest on screen success ever.  If these do well enough, could CBS put out his version of Nero Wolfe once and for all?  Like that series, this one never becomes formulaic, which I hope holds as we go through later seasons.

The 1.33 X 1 image again is a little softer throughout than I would have liked between shows for whatever reason, though there are clean and colorful moments.  Hope they fix them up more for Blu-ray.  The Dolby Digital 2.0 Mono is better, nice and clean enough for its age, though maybe some work could be done to fix them up here and there.  Extras include episodic promos, but nothing new or vintage otherwise, which ought to be corrected in the next sets.
