It is one
thing to be crude when doing comedy, but it is harder than veer to be funny and
I was reminded of this right off the bat with the recent stand-up comedy
concert Louis C.K. – Chewed Up as
the hour-long would-be joke/laughfest begins with jokes about the slur “faggot”
(or however you want to misspell it) and goes down hill from there. It is interesting how the audience does not laugh
like they might otherwise have on the lowest common denominator level, but it
is funny how ill-timed and lame this opener is.
He tries
to explain he is not a homophobe and defines the word as an indult towards
male’s displaying effeminate as an alternative to what the word historically
has stood for (hate crimes included) and continues to go down the road of using
the word in a supposedly “harmless” text.
Of course, there is no such thing, but it is in this world he lives and
after getting over that, continues to do so to the point of banality. He then displays his supposed humor and wit
on other subjects, but never recovers to the point that even any potential
hecklers were likely bored. Skip it!
The
anamorphically enhanced 1.78 X 1 image is softer throughout than a new HD
taping should be and is not the best shoot for this kind of material to boot. The Dolby Digital 2.0 Stereo is adequate at
best. The only extra is (here we go) an
interview with the comic that never reveals much, but enough is enough.
