Time/space
travel thrillers usually do not work and lately, we have not seen many of them,
but Jason Bourque’s Termination Point
(2007) is one of the few with Lou Diamond Phillips as a scientist who seems to
have stolen/developed an experimental version of a new “gateway” system (Stargate anyone?) while the government
and investigators (including one played by Jason Priestly) before it is too
late… or is it the government that should be feared?
Unfortunately,
a potentially interesting thriller collapses early on with its poor script and
the sheer inexperience of its director.
Effects are dull and Phillips steals all of his scenes. Then this becomes melodramatic in a silly way
and formulaic all the way. That’s a
shame, because this is a good idea and Phillips playing against type was an
interesting idea, but Priestly is not so good here and this wraps up in 90
minutes as if it was cut down. We may
never know, but this just does not work.
The
anamorphically enhanced 1.85 X 1 image is soft throughout, especially when the
digital effects kick in, while the Dolby Digital 5.1 mix is a little more
lively than expected, but not by much. A
behind the scenes featurette is the only extra.
