Joachim
Trier attempts to do a comedy in the Run
Lola Run mode about two friends who write similar, competitive books and
the various ways they may of may not change history in Reprise (2006) and comes up with a film that is much less original,
interesting and ultimately too self-impressed for its own good. The script (which Trier co-wrote) is no
character study, starts plenty of things it cannot finish and is not as funny as
it thinks it is either.
Amelie may also be an influence, but
this eventually becomes more about noise and voiceover than a story or even an
interesting experience. Sure the idea
has possibilities, but after the first reel or so, you know this is going to be
redundant and unlikely to add up to anything.
The fact that we have already seen so many films like it before makes it
an even thinner bore, but I at least liked some of the actors and ideas.
The anamorphically
enhanced 1.85 X 1 image is a little soft and color challenged, but looks decent
otherwise, though the split screen is overdone.
The Dolby Digital 5.1 mix is surround-limited, has music here &
there and is dialogue-based. This
includes a heavy use of voiceover.
Extras include a montage of how often the word sorry is used on and of
camera, anecdotes, three featurettes and deleted scenes.
