Though
the cover and text sell Brenton Spencer’s Never
Cry Werewolf (2007) as some serious Horror film, it is really a bad comedy
with more violence than it would need to show if it had a better script. The monster is seen too soon and often, comes
across more as a machine than supernatural creature and the storyline of the
monster/neighbor who knows he is one and is tormenting 16-year old Laura (Nina
Dobrev) as well as us with this formula dumbness. She cries “wolf” too many times and no one
believes her, get it?
We didn’t
care either.
Kevin
Sorbo shows up for no good reason except to mug and get a paycheck, but when
you see his name, you know comedy will be somewhere and that is bad news for
anything he does that has to do with Horror.
The 90 minutes concludes by admitting that everything is a joke and the
makers have zero idea of what to do with the materials or situation.
The
anamorphically enhanced 1.85 X 1 image is nothing special, with slight softness
throughout and barely consistent color.
The Dolby Digital 5.1 mix is surprisingly poor in dialogue and
soundfield for a Horror film, with the budget limits showing. Sound effects gimmickry is also unimpressive. There are no extras.
