A tale of
two women who go on a mission in female-unfriendly Algeria during a civil war
is the crux of Diamila Sahraoui’s Enough
(aka Barakat!/2006) which shows us
things we have seen before, but at least puts them into a context that works. Set in the 1990s, a young woman needs to know
what happened to her husband and an older woman joins her on the trip to find
out the truth. This is well cast and
acted, though it never breaks out into much more.
However,
it is solid storytelling and compelling enough to look at because it is the
kind of story we do not hear about enough, as the news media does not know how
to tell these stories and this civil war is another the world media did not
cover much, is not taught enough about and is ignored to the point that those
ignoring it are complicit in helping protect and cover for those perpetuating
it. This is why the title is so apt.
The anamorphically
enhanced 1.85 X 1 is very soft and it is hard to tell if it the transfer or the
production, but is just watchable, while the Dolby Digital 2.0 mix is barely
stereo, has no surrounds and is better.
Extras include director’s notes, director’s biography and a profile of
Algeria.
