The Odd Couple – The Third & Fourth Season (CBS DVD/1972 - 4)

Sometimes
when a TV show comes out on DVD and starts by looking and sounding good,
especially for its age if it a classic hit, the later seasons look a little
shabbier or worse. With the Third & Fourth Season sets of the
original, classic TV version of The Odd
Couple with Jack Klugman and Tony Randall on DVD, the good news is that the
quality has been very consistent. You
can read my previous coverage starting with this link:

By this
time, Randall and Klugman developed into one of TV history’s greatest duos and
a pair more than worth of their feature film counterparts, Jack Lemmon and
Walter Matthau. The writers, directors
and producers were also on a roll, from funny situations (Felix on Password) to crazy titles (Last Tango In Newark) and the result is
a show that reached a rare high in prolificness and greatness few sitcoms
(especially filmed ones, as just about all of them went to tape by the end of
the decade) on film to be so great. Add
the Mary Tyler Moore cycle to that.
The 1.33
X 1 image is again not bad, but despite the clean and sometimes colorful
appearance of the prints come with a bit more grain than one might like, but it
is hard to tell if this is from the original camera materials or when these
prints were struck. The Dolby Digital
2.0 Mono is still nice and clean for its age, so the combination is good, but
only HD transfers will reveal to what extent.
Despite some nice extras on the first set, there are once again (twice!!!) zero here when they should
have increased the goodies.
