Eureka - Season Two (Universal DVD)

Picture: B-     Sound: B     Extras: B     Episodes: B-

We were not able to cover the first season of this show and having not seen the show on The Sci-Fi Channel, this was an interesting treat, even when the show became semi-formulaic.  The film almost reminds me of the brilliant 80’s film Real Genius, which dealt with brilliant minds being mislead into building government-run weaponry.  Here we have the best minds in American moved to a town where they solely build futuristic inventions for the government and of course for their benefit.

The show is funny and even unintentionally funny at times, plus some jokes will go over most heads.  Regardless of that it is a fun show and gains solid momentum as the episodes run on, apparently the show was originally going to be an animated show, but it works much better with real actors and becomes far more believable and makes more sense in this format.

Episodes:

Phoenix Rising

Try, Try Again

Upredictable

Games People Play

Duck, Duck Goose

Noche de Suenos

Family Reunion

E=MC…?

Sight Unseen

God is in the Details

Maneater

All That Glitters

A Night at Global Dynamics

The technical specs are good as well with a pleasing 1.78 X 1 anamorphic transfer that shows that TV can look good when done right.  While it still falls under the limited definition that DVD can offer, colors still look good and detail is fine as well.  The 5.1 Dolby Digital mix is a nice touch as well.  There is also a great deal of extras that make this set a must for fans as it includes a featurette about the show, Sci-Fi webcasts, deleted scenes, PSA’s, a gag reel, podcast commentary, and a writers feature, which round off this set in great fashion.

Now that I have seen this season I am highly inclined to watch it from the beginning, but I was still able to join up with the show without being too lost in what is going on and I can only hope this is a show that lasts and won’t run out of ideas!
