When it
comes to early adventure literature, it is amazing how many bad, dull, boring
adaptations that actually discourage people from reading books to begin with
get made. With the 3-D version of Journey To The Center Of The Earth arriving
in theaters, a few other versions are hitting DVD and one of the worst is the
2007 RHI-produced version of the Jules Verne novel with Rick Schroder, Peter
Fonda and a bunch of bad special effects.
Set in
the time of a book about a century ago, the costumes look fake, sets
inauthentic and pace very poor. RHI
botches another one and at 90 minutes, there is no chance to develop anything
anyhow. This is one of many versions to
skip.
The
anamorphically enhanced 1.85 X 1 image is also soft, made worse when the
digital is added, while the Dolby Digital 5.1 mix is thin and really stretches
out sound that should not be 5.1. Extras
include two interviews, one with Fonda, the other with Schroder and Victoria
Pratt.
