If you
are a young Asian woman with long, dark, straight hair, two things will
happen. One, you’ll be haunted by ghosts
who want to kill you or two, you will be a ghost in a wet, long white t-shirt
who kills everyone else. Why, who
knows? This stupid cycle continues with
the initially promising Voice, a
supernatural Korean thriller by Writer/Director Equan Choe, centered on a
school for girls that includes learning music.
Unfortunately, the film quickly hits a sour note and holds it for most
of its disappointing 104 minutes.
Initially,
the idea of connecting an evil killer spirit to the music has its promise and
the first teen girl victim should have led to more alarm and more mystery and
suspense, but instead, it quickly implodes into formula and seems not to know
where to go. That is sad because the
set-ups are not bad and the cast meshes well.
Too bad the rest of it is very off-key.
The
anamorphically enhanced 1.85 X 1 image is very soft, though the shoot by
cinematographer Kim Young-Heung has its moments so much so that you will want
to see this on film or Blu-ray. The
Dolby Digital Korean 5.1 mix is better, but dialogue can be lacking, as is the
soundfield. Extras include the original
trailer and a behind the scenes featurette.
