Hanoi Rocks – The Nottingham Tapes (MVD DVD)

Finland
is not known much for their Rock bands, but Hanoi Rocks (formed in 1979) is one
of the few to have success reaching the U.S. and a year before the death of
their drummer Razzle (Nicholas Dingley) caused them to break up, this 4/23/84
concert was recorded and is released on DVD as The Nottingham Tapes. He
would be gone eight months later.
Unfortunately,
I found the concert here muddy, whether it was the poor quality of the 1.33 X 1
image or the Dolby Digital 2.0 sound, which is practically mono and though the
case says there is a Dolby 5.1 track (we could not find it) and/or suggests
using Pro Logic II or DTS Neo, it does not sound good. Previews for other Cherry Red DVDs are the
only extras and they are dull.
A Hard
Rock outfit with a Punk attitude and some Glam Rock derivation, the band is
unique at the least and an acquired taste.
The 14 tracks here (including an awkward, ineffective cover of Creedence
Clearwater Revival’s Up Around The Bend)
did not impress me enough to make me a fan, but I have heard them before and
will give them another shot down the line.
As for this DVD, it is limited to fans the most curious only.
