My Boys has an interesting premise that
is handled with some intelligence and maturity as a together sports writer
(Jordana Spiro) juggles her life, profession and being part of an all-boys club
in one of the more interesting ideas for a sitcom of late. Without a laugh track, it works better, but
it also seems like so much more could be done with the idea and the cast is not
at issue.
However,
this is not the worst starting point for a live action show of late and maybe
with some adjusting and a more realistic feel of sports (without annoying real
life star cameos) this could be a hit and show that really works. But many shows that were different in their Complete First Season than later ones
worked better as they grew and this show has that potential. Whether things work out or not is a later
story, but the 22 half-hours here are on the consistent side and if you like
the concept, you will find them worth a look.
The
anamorphically enhanced 1.78 X 1 image is not badly shot, but colors are dull
and despite a clean presentation, detail and depth can be an issue across the
board. The Dolby Digital 5.1 mix is so
much in the center channel, then that dialogue is so compressed that you have
to consider the episodes all have encoding mistakes to some extent. It is bad.
Four featurettes, bloopers, two lame “minisodes” and deleted scenes are
the extras.
