Cinematographer-turned-director
Tom DiCillo has had a mixed time at the helm of his films and Delirious (2007, finished 2006) is no
exception. Michael Pitt is down and out
homeless guy Toby who meets up with an aggressive entertainment photographer
(Steve Buscemi) who helps him get his life back together, especially if he can
help him land exclusives with a big pop star (Alison Lohman) who Toby happens
to like very much.
Unfortunately,
this has too many clichés and bad jokes about Hollywood like almost all such
films in the last 15 years, with Pitt’s transformation from homeless to
glamorous totally unconvincing. However,
his work, long with Buscemi’s and casts is more watchable than most such
films. It is just a shame the script and
approach has such a sense of smug, know-it-all-ness that sabotages a
potentially good film.
The
anamorphically enhanced 1.85 X 1 image is a little soft and color limited,
filmed in 35mm, it has its moments, but not enough in this format. Hopefully, a Blu-ray will reveal more. The Dolby Digital 2.0 Stereo is also not bad
for a dialogue-based film and is recorded well enough. Extras include promo shorts, a Music Video,
trailer, making of featurette and audio commentary by DiCillo.
