Drawn Together – Seasons One, Two & Three (Comedy Central/Paramount DVD)

Picture: C+     Sound: C+     Extras: C     Episodes: C+

Shows like South Park, The Simpsons and Family Guy have brought out the gritty, comic, raw side of what animation could do like nothing since Ralph Bakshi’s X-rated films, but doing the send-up in the realm of the more cherished characters is another story and a more sensitive issue.  Drawn Together is such a show with send-up rip-offs of famous characters and has three seasons and counting on DVD, with extended, uncensored cuts in the latest set.

The problem is that the show is a one-joke idea and though the idea is funny, it is stretched out more than you might think and the makers only seem to have a limited grasp of what they are sending up, making them rely on obvious comedy and gross jokes that you can hear for free anywhere.  If interested, start with the first season, so if you really like it, you can go on from there.

The 1.33 X 1 image is has aliasing errors here and there, but it is meant to look a bit cheap as it intends to cheapen the animated world it sends up.  Color is consistent and good, which helps the picture.  The Dolby Digital 2.0 Stereo is just fine for a comedy, but has no surrounds and nothing else special about it.  Extras include a Karaoke Sing-Along piece, audio commentaries and old Network Promos.
