Eric
Byler’ attempts to tell a serious story about a love triangle, but trips up all
over himself with Tre, an low-budget attempt to do a near-love triangle that
has uneven acting, uneven directing and dialogue by Byler and Kimberly-Rose
Wolter that can be unintentionally laughable when it is not pretentious. The title character (Daniel Cariaga) is a
slob who comes to the home of his best friend Gabe (Erik McDowell) who already
has a guest with a relationship problem in Nina (Alix Kormzay) and his
girlfriend (Wolter) who loves Gabe and vice versa.
However,
Tre becomes interested in Nina, is crossing the line upon arrival and it will
not be long before there is a clash between Tre and the couple to be. Unfortunately, it is predictable, trite and
when all is said and done, nothing is surprising here. If anything, this is surprisingly uneven,
even for a low-budget work and no amount of praise or kudos can change
that. Hardly any of it is believable and
the characters are just too dumbed down.
Note how much better they come across in the interview extra.
The
anamorphically enhanced 1.78 X 1 image very soft, shot on digital low def (with
a good Panasonic camera at that level, as it turns out) and can be very trying
throughout to sit through. The Dolby
Digital 2.0 Stereo is simple and the default highlight of the disc. Extras include a Q&A with Byler,
behind-the-scenes piece, deleted scenes, commentary track and Byler’s short Kenji’s Faith.
