Korn – Live At Montreux 2004 (Eagle DVD)

Picture: B-     Sound: B-     Extras: C-     Concert: B

Korn is one of those rare Rock bands that work hard, have talent, know their audience, care about their audience, give it their all and make consistently good music, even with the line-up changes.  I also believe that they have been often censored by the mainstream media because there is a certain radical segment of the Politically Correct Left who hates the idea that White Males might enjoy Rock music and have fun, even if the band is not Right Wing.  This Stalinist equivalent of NBC canceling The Monkees (a much lighter act who eventually became a band) because they though their success subverted Vietnam efforts is as inane and insane then as it is now, but Korn lives and Live At Montreux 2004 is one of the last records of the original line-up.

Brian Welch, their co-guitarist and backing vocalist soon left, but not before this impressive 75 minutes-long concert was recorded.  Tracks include:

1)     Right Now

2)     Break Some Off

3)     Got The Life

4)     Here To Stay

5)     Falling Away From Me

6)     Blind

7)     Shoots & Ladders

8)     One

9)     Freak On A Leash

10)  A.D.I.D.A.S.

11)  Dead Bodies Everywhere

12)  Did My Time

13)  Another Brick In The Wall

14)  F***t

15)  Somebody Someone

16)  Y’All Want A Single

You’ll wish this was longer, but it is one of the most interesting and energetic releases in this series and that accounts for something.  Johnathan Davis’ singing is on target and they have a great audience.  What more could you ask for?

The anamorphically enhanced 1.78 X 1 image may have some detail issues, but color is impressive, some of the best in this series since the Yes release.  This makes it a primary candidate for Blu-ray right there.  However, the Dolby Digital 5.1 and 2.0 mixes are weaker than expected and the DTS 5.1 displays a particular problem all the mixes do:  the singing is not full or direct in the mix.  Especially in the 5.1 versions, the voice sounds spread out across the three speakers instead of having a direct center(-ish) location as you would usually have in such mixes.  Intended or not, it is not a defect, but maybe not a good choice.

The only extra is a paper pullout inside the DVD case with a good essay.  You can read more about the band in our coverage of their 6th album, 2003’s Take A Look In The Mirror, at this link:
