Yu’s Go Go G-Boys (2007) could have
been a really good, fun project from its love of world pop culture to its
amusing story of two childhood friends (one straight, one gay) who get together
again when the straight one is in debt because his girlfriend he thought he
could trust maxed out his credit card.
The script is not exactly misogynistic, but the final product does have
some odd issues with women.
Hong (the
straight one) could win the money in a contest, but it is restricted to gay
men, so his gay buddy Shin helps give him the legitimate credibility to enter
and they land up falling for each other.
Though the whole thing is predictable, the energy and ways pop culture
is used is amusing. Too bad it is not
fully realized, though being a part of queer cinema, maybe it is as realized as
it is going to be and is happy to fall back on its humor and silliness. Now you can see for yourself.
The letterboxed
1.78 X 1 image is a digital video shoot in low definition and has softness
throughout and even some aliasing issues.
Fleshtones and definition are a little off, but the color range that is
here helps save the playback. The Dolby
Digital 2.0 sound is barely stereo, has its share of echo, is the kind of
location audio that you’d find on many a home movie, but also mixes in music in
a way that is more professional. A
trailer is the only extra.
