Another
little-seen yet long-running British TV situation comedy, Roy Clarke’s Last Of The Summer Wine (1976) features the would-be
adventures of Compo, Clegg and Foggy, old men trying to find new things to do
with their lives, even if it means getting into trouble or nearly getting
killed. With so much idle time on their
hands, they still have not been able to get the schemes out of their system from
decades ago, so there willing to try some of them now, even if arthritis gets
in their way.
As
compared to The Golden Girls, this
is wackier as these are rougher characters constantly up to no good, but the
one thing both shows have in common is their wittiness, though for Wine, the humor is very British. I was not falling on the floor laughing over
this show, yet, I did find it very amusing at times and was pleased it was as
consistent as it was. If you have never
seen or heard of it, Last Of The Summer
Wine is definitely worth a look if you like sitcoms with a brain.
The 1.33
X 1 image is a little weak from early color analog PAL video, but is watchable
enough just the same, while the Dolby Digital 2.0 Mono fares a bit better with
decent clarity for its age. Extras include
interviews with co-stars Peter Sallis and Brian Wilde. All in all, an amusing Britcom worth a look
if interested.
