A satire
that has its moments, though I may have missed some of the jokes, Paul Bright’s
Theft (2007) offers a clash between
a gay community in a rural area with Bible-thumping homophobes who have nothing
better to do but annoy and insult them.
A gay convict (Patrick Henderson) finds himself in a relationship with
the rather naïve guy named Guy (Matthew Burnett) who push the town over the
edge when they go for each other.
Throw in
the local gay disco and cross-dressing contests against all of this, it offers
plenty of opportunities for laughs, but not all of them are taken advantage
of. However, there is enough here for
those interested and the result is amusing and ambitious at least.
The
letterboxed 1.78 X 1 image originated on digital video of some kind that does
not look like High Definition and when they are not trying to be fancy and can
concentrate, it can look good. However,
the format and transfer have motion blur throughout, though color is
consistent. The Dolby Digital 2.0 is a
little problematic throughout, including some obvious voiceover work, but it is
not too harsh. Extras include a brief
look behind the scenes and a trailer.
