Naturally 7 – Live At Montreux 2007 (Eagle DVD)

I like a capella singing and there was even a subcycle of such groups that did not lead to a new trend as expected.  Now, a new vocal group called Naturally 7 has arrived and Naturally 7 – Live At Montreux 2007 is on DVD to feature what they believe they do best.  The songs include:

1)     Fly Baby

2)     Can Ya Feel It?

3)     Broken Wings

4)     Another You

5)     What Is It? (Excuse For Me)

6)     Say You Love Me

7)     Simon & Garfunkel medley: Sounds Of Silence/Scarborough Fair/April Come She Will

8)     Back To the Essence/solos

9)     In The Air Tonight

10)  Open Your Eyes

They do better on the soul genre songs than pop, rock or folk.  They botch the Simon & Garfunkel material, in part by shortening and trivializing it as if they could care less.  Track 6 is not the Fleetwood Mac hit, though that would have been interesting.  However, track 3 is the Mr. Mister hit and is one of the highlights here.  Then there is the 10th track, the dreadful Phil Collins song that their performance proves is a really, really bad record in any form.

However, they are a new act and need some time to grow.  They have potential, but need to try more material, take more risks and take some songs not as easy to take on more seriously.  This concert is about an hour, short of one of these DVDs, but it was enough (as rough as it is) to make me curious to see what they’ll do next.

The anamorphically enhanced 1.78 X 1 image may have been shot in HD, but this DVD has detail and depth limits, some softness and only consistent color holds from the downtrade.  The recording is also rough, even in DTS 5.1, which is the best option besides Dolby Digital 5.1 and 2.0 mixes.  The only extra is an interview.
