Me, Myself & Irene (Blu-ray)

Sometimes you just push your luck one too many times and commit professional suicide by repeating yourself.  Back in 2000, Jim Carrey did one stupid comedy too many with The Farrelly Brothers’ Me, Myself & Irene and though it did some business, it turned off his core audience to the point that they have never returned to see another comedy of his like this or in any other way since.  The film tries to be a comedy about split personality, but no matter the set-up, it is just Carrey repeating himself in a dumb new way that never adds up.

 

Renée Zellweger becomes his character’s new love interest when a divorce sets him off into another kind of “splitsville” but the script is lazy, does not know how to make the most of the situation, wastes Zellweger (as well as the audience’s time) and when the tired 116 minutes ends, you too will think “that was what?!?”

 

I can see why Fox wants to get this out of the way as a recent back catalog film, but only diehard fans of it are going to really want to own it.  The rest of us can just move on.

 

The 1080p 1.85 X 1 MPEG-2 @ 38 MBPS digital High Definition image is not very good, though it is better than it would be on DVD, still is not as good as it should be for a next-generation format.  The DTS HD 5.1 MA (Master Audio) lossless mix is the default highlight of the disc, with clean dialogue, vividly dippy music and a better soundfield than expected.  Extras include original trailers in HD, deleted scenes with optional Farrelly commentary and feature length audio commentary by the brothers.
