Recently,
Gordon Lightfoot had to witness his enduring hit Sundown turned into a Rap record.
That version faded quickly and his body of work not only continues to
endure, but grow in so many ways. That
is why Umbrella Entertainment has reissued His
Greatest Hits: Live In Reno on DVD for all too see and hear. This was taped in 2000 and features the following:
1)
Don Quixote
2)
I’d Prove My Love
3)
The House You Live In
4)
Sundown
5)
Carefree Highway
6)
Restless
7)
Blackberry Wine
8)
For Lovin’ Me/Did She Mention My
Name (Medley)
9)
The Wreck Of The Edmund Fitzgerald
10) Waiting For You
11) Fading Away
12) Rainy Day People
13) Shadows
14) If You Could Read My Mind
15) A Painter Passing Through
16) Make Way For The Lady
17) Early Morning Rain
18) Baby Step Back
19) Song For A Winter’s Night
20) Canadian Railroad Trilogy
21) Oil Dan’s Record
22) Cold On The Shoulder
He wrote
them all, sings them all and is an amazing talent with far more to say. In this show, his voice is a little strained
for whatever reason, but it still sounds like him. Still, the voice is affected and it hurts the
show in the long term, but it is still so much better than many other shows we
have seen lately from artists of his time.
His big hits period was 1971 – 78 and it is a shame we have not seen a
well-deserved comeback. At least Vincent
Gallo’s The Brown Bunny featured one great record not here, Beautiful.
The 1.33
X 1 image is consistent in color, but has some digititis and aliasing problems
that hold back the clarity, something I have noticed on some other NTSC
Canadian tapings we have covered in the past.
The sound has been remixed for Dolby Digital 5.1, but it is sadly just
an ambience boost and reminded me of how badly his whole catalog needs
remastered by Warner. Extras include
previews for other music DVDs from Umbrella.

above, you can order this set exclusively from Umbrella at:
