In all
the hype about “The Boss” and criticism of his politics, along with his current
treatment of legendary status without explanation, the most vital part of Bruce
Springsteen’s career is getting lost in the shuffle. Bruce
Springsteen - Tales Of The Working Man: Under Review 1978 – 1982 covers his
most honest, paired-down albums and ones for which many fans still do not get: Darkness On The Edge Of Town, The River and Nebraska.
Usually,
this series is good at hitting the nail on the head about its music subject,
but the 81 minutes here dance around the material and the editing of material
is only hinders the lack of focus throughout.
Despite some people here I really respect, this never gels and leaves
these important albums still not very delved into. Nevertheless, the rare footage of Springsteen
will make fans happy, but these albums badly need a second look as maybe the
most important part of his legacy.
The 1.33
X 1 image has some letterboxed footage, but is full screen otherwise and not
bad, sourced from analog PAL video. The
Dolby Digital 2.0 is somewhat stereo with more talking than any music. Extras include Larry David Smith’s Phases Of Springsteen and contributor
bios with illustrations.
