One of
the most underrated actors around is D.B. Sweeney and he proves how good he is
once again in the Kenneth Masden film A
Day In October (1990) playing an injured fighter in the Danish Resistance
against the Nazis and pushes the Jewish family The Kublitz’s into a moral
dilemma. They should protect him, but
what if they get caught? When many
others are executed in the search for him, they think the killing will stop if
he is turned over, but it is not that simple.
Damian E.
Slattery’s screenplay is intelligent and the film decent, with good
performances all around, but for whatever reason, it was not a big hit even in
art houses. Schindler’s List was a few
years away and one wonders if it would have received more recognition if it
came out afterwards. Now you can see
what you missed.
The 1.33
X 1 image is surprisingly soft from older analog transfers with detail issues,
motion blur and aliasing issues. The Dolby
Digital 2.0 Stereo has no surrounds, though it was a Dolby SR (Spectral
Recording) advanced analog release.
Maybe an HD version could have the proper upgrades and some extras next
time.
