Little Britain – The Complete Collection (BBC DVD)

Though it
folded in 2006, Little Britain turns out to be the most successful skit TV show
on British TV in years, not being made available in Complete Collection DVD box (made like a book) form BBC Home
Video. The 8-DVD set covers all the
shows starting in 2003 and they are not in total as wacky as the Live version that we covered recently
on DVD.
There are
ongoing jokes, sex jokes, men who dress like women and off-beat comedy, but no
mater how formless it gets, the show is entertaining enough, even if I was not
falling out of my chair. Guest like
Elton John, George Michael and Dawn French did not hurt, while the regular
characters (played by a cast that includes creators Matt Lucas & David
Williams also features Anthony Head (TV’s Buffy
The Vampire Slayer, Manchild,
the Nescafé/Taster’s Choice TV commercial campaigns) and even the voice of Tom
Baker, the last great Doctor Who.
All in
all, the show is more of a grab bag like SCTV, which is not a bad thing. Try it somewhere and if you like it, you
might as well get the whole set.
The
anamorphically enhanced 1.78 X 1 image is shot in older HD, but is nicely
transferred throughout the discs, while the Dolby Digital 2.0 Stereo is simple
with no surrounds. The combination is
passable, if not great. Extras include
audio commentary on select shows, Comic
Relief appearances, on camera actor/creator interviews, bonus sketches,
behind the scenes documentary, radio work, making the DVDs and even a South Bank special.
