The Wayan
Brothers will try anything once, as Little
Man recently proved, for a laugh. In
the summer of 2000 when so many releases were awful and underperforming, their
raunchy comedy Scary Movie managed
to out-gross better films like Hollow
Man, The Patriot, Space Cowboys and Chicken Run. This shocked
the industry as a whole and pale imitators are still being churned out all the
time and sprung on the public at the last moment possible.
Taking
its cue from the revival slasher hit Scream,
the film randomly takes shots at every good (and especially bad) hit film it
can, for 88 brisk and occurrently gross minutes. The problem with the film is that it is a one
joke film, no match for Airplane! or
its imitators. That kind of segmented,
fragmented humor goes back to Woody Allen’s Take The Money & Run, but this is so choppy that any joke that
could have worked is marred by bad pacing.
As a result, a bad film like this has aged very badly and been outdone
by later sequels. But you can always see
for yourself if you never saw it before.
The 1080p
2.35 X 1 digital High Definition image looks good for a low budget comedy no
one thought would do that much business, but in order for the visual aspects of
the jokes to work, Director of Photography Francis Kenny, A.S.C., knew clarity
was the key and fan will appreciate the big improvement over previous video
versions. The PCM 16/48 5.1 mix is not
as good, but still an improvement over the tired Dolby Digital 5.1 mix
presented here and in previous editions.
Extras include a behind the scenes featurette, original theatrical
trailer and additional scenes not seen theatrically.
