Stargate Atlantis – Season 3/Stargate SG-1: Season
10 (MGM DVD)

Stargate Atlantis picks up where Season 2 left off (described in
previous review) with the Wraith still not under control and new threats always
on the horizon (like new trouble every episode this season). Seriously, the galaxy is a dangerous place; I
wouldn’t go out there after seeing what happens to these people. This season just seems to be all out war with
new groups and old groups alike trying to take over the same areas. In essence, this season more than any other
is a power struggle. Whereas this
reviewer does enjoy Stargate Atlantis
more than SG-1, this season really
took a dip to this reviewer. The actors
are great and though the story arches are all greatly integrated, they lack a
certain character that keeps the audience going. The core of the matter being this reviewer
became bored.
The Tenth and Final Season of SG-1 brings out the BIG guns. Though this reviewer has not seen every
season of SG-1, it is obvious that
Season 10 was meant to go out with a bang.
The crew is still looking for Merlin’s secret weapon, apparently, and is
having a great deal of trouble completing their mission. This season also marks the first combined
efforts of two series SG-1 and Atlantis; SG-1 going to Atlantis
for a helpful rendezvous. Overall, it
was a good final season (not great), but was lacking leaving many holes in a
decade long series. On the bright side
the studio is apparently making straight to DVD films to clear up these issues;
let’s just hope those DVDs are nothing like The Pretender straight to DVD films that were ‘suppose to clear up
plot holes.’
The
technical aspects on both these sets are very similar; even down to the fact
that they are both 5 Disc Season Sets, both with features that are quite
good. The picture on each set is presented in a clean 1.78 X 1
Widescreen. The picture remains fluid and lucid throughout, and with the
high degree of action and fast paced motion in these types of series quality is
often sacrificed for flash; not here. The light and dark issues in the
previous season of Atlantis also
seem to have been taken care of, with little too no issues observed. The sound once again is adequate in its Dolby
Digital 5.1 Surround mixes; highlighting the action of both series, but does
sometimes fall short of the quality other series demonstrate on DVD.
The
extras are not too impressive but adequate for each series and fans will enjoy
the few featurettes offered. The commentaries would be the most
interesting thing on these sets due to the high story arches and creative
direction taken for each series. A side
by side comparison would be interesting, due to each series being similar yet
so different at the same time.
